It might seem like a lot of work to find a new dentist, but it’s really not that hard. If you just follow a few common sense steps, the chances are good you’ll find someone you’ll trust with the dental health of you and your family for years to come.

Getting Started

The first thing to do will be to ask your friends, neighbors, family members or co-workers who they would recommend. When you get a recommendation from someone whose opinion you trust, it’s probably going to be a very good one. You could also ask your doctor if he or she has any recommendations.

Narrowing Down Your List

Once you have the names of three or four dentists, take some time to visit each one. Take mental notes on the way you’re treated by everyone you come in contact with, including the receptionist and everyone else. If you have reason to feel uneasy, scratch that office off your list.

Ask Questions

You’ll want to ask a lot of questions during each visit. For example, you’ll want to know if the dentist takes your insurance, and if his or her hours work with your schedule. Find out how they handle emergencies. Do they provide emergency dentistry in-house or do they refer patients to other dentists?

Once you weigh the pros and cons of the different dentists you’ve visited, go with your instincts. Odds are you’ll wind up making the right choice.
